From !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , this Toyota 2000GT just sold for $968,000. It's a California car that's been kept in a private collection for more than ten years. It was sold at a Sotheby's and RM collaboration auction they called "The Art of the Automobile".
The 2000GT has just recently seen a huge uptick in value. Several years ago a million dollars for any Toyota would be considered absolutely crazy, but now 4 2000GTs have sold for around that price. Check out the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to see the change visually.
I think it's part of an upward trend as Japanese classics gain more popularity with more traditional collectors. Another great example of this is the Mazda Cosmo. Check out !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! here:
Both cars have almost doubled in value since 2011 with the Cosmo playing catch up. I'm glad to see the Japanese classics getting some much deserved attention and respect, but hate the fact I may never own a 2000GT. I've still got my eyes on a Cosmo though...or maybe a real Hakosuka GT-R...

This is probably the only toyota in the history of forever that will command this much cash. I think the second closest valuable toyota would be the last gen supra, and we know thats not even a 100,000 dollar car.

Are we only talking cars with the Toyota badge? I could see the LF-A getting there eventually.

You have a valid argument but only time will tell if that holds true.

Only time will tell...
I'm predicting a a peak in Japanese car values similar to Muscle Cars. Throw in low miles, rare option or package...we might see a Supra do something like this '70 Plymouth Cuda .

I think the supra has a good chance of going up in value, maybe the other 90's jap supercars will as well. Like muscle cars of yesteryear, they go from expensive when new, to cheap and modded all to hell, to old and very scarce, then the value comes back up when people want them all over again. When we're all riding in automated electric pods in 50 years, the 80's and 90's performance cars will have their day.

That's exactly it. I call it 'The Gran Turismo Effect'. People who were 15-25 years old when Gran Turismo and The Fast and The Furious came out will be the ones that drive the market. Just like the Boomers with their muscle cars, the Gen X and Y'ers are going to try to get what they couldn't have in high school as soon as they have the money. Give it 20 years.
I think even the less desirable Japanese cars are going to make a comeback. People get nostalgic. Think about how even a plain jane Chevelle is considered cool now. I don't think a base Chevelle with the straight 6 was cool in the 70's...
